Kind of like the last few weeks I will not be around here very much.  I am making quite a lot of Christmas presents this week because I want to make sure I have enough time to get them done.  So if you would like to make some gifts I will leave you with some good links.  And you do not have to know how to sew.  There are all kinds of different things you can make.

There are many others and I will post more as I have time this week.  Let me know what you all plan to make.

My cousin had a baby last year.  She delivered 9 weeks early.  We were all pretty shocked when she went into labor.  Well, she had a baby boy and he weighed about 2 1/2 pounds.  He did very well fortunately.  So she decided that this year she would put together goody bags for moms whose babies are in the NICU during the holidays.  She has gotten quite a few donations.  My contribution is preemie hats.  I found this free pattern online so I thought I would share with you how to make one.

First, go here and print off the free pattern. This pattern is no longer available.  I found this one that is a lot like it.

Now, fold the fabric in half with wrong sides together and cut out the pattern.  Make sure it is stretchy where the fabric indicates.

STUFF 243

Now fold the material with the right sides facing each other.

STUFF 244

Now sew the material as the pattern indicates.

STUFF 247

According to the pattern you should: Roll one end up around the outside of the other so that
the wrong sides are together and points are matching.  I find a picture to be helpful in understanding exactly what that says (it could just be me).

STUFF 248

Adjust opening so that all of the seams match up in the middle top. Serge/sew a straight seam across the top through all layers.

STUFF 249

STUFF 250

Turn top seam to inside of hat.

STUFF 251
Roll up bottom of hat to make brim.

STUFF 252

And here is my daughter’s baby doll modeling the hat:

STUFF 254

This is a really easy sewing project and very worthwhile.  I would advise calling your local hospital to see what their policies are regarding donations.

It is the tiniest little hat and so sweet.  I can’t imagine what those moms go through watching their little ones being so tiny and struggling.  I am very thankful my cousin’s son came through very well and is now a healthy 11 month old.

Also, if you are in the Indianapolis area and would like to donate something please leave me a comment and I will e-mail you with the details.

T apron and misc 009I made this nursing cover before I had the baby.  I had never used a nursing cover before with my other 2 children.   I was not sure how I would like this cover, but after using it almost everyday for the last week or so I can honestly say that I love it.

I am not a fan of public nursing (for myself, I don’t mind if others do it as long as we don’t get a glimpse of the boobies), but I actually used this cover to nurse at McDonald’s today and it worked so well.  I was completely covered and I could still see the baby.

Also, I (well actually my mother-in-law) washed this cover and it still held its shape.  I did iron it because it was a little wrinkled.  If you can sew at all, I would encourage you to make this cover.  If you know someone that sews maybe you could have them make you one.  It really is a great cover that is worth trying out!  It works for me!

I have been doing just a little bit of sewing lately.  I made my wonderful stepmom (T) one of my aprons that I love to make.  She wanted one to match her kitchen colors so my sister went with me and helped me pick out the material.

I think she was happy with it.

I also made a nursing cover for myself and then two more for friends from my church.  We are all do within a week (or 10 days) of each other.  Both of them are probably going to deliver sometime this weekend.  One is due Friday and the other is being induced on Friday – yes, I am jealous.

Anyway, I had never heard of this particular nursing cover until someone told me about it while I was working in our church nursery.  She said they were called Hooter Hiders (don’t google that name).  After getting past the name, I did find an online tutorial that showed you how to make something similar.  I just love free online tutorials.  This was a good one.  So below are the results:

I couldn’t fit all three into the picture.

And you can tell by the next picture that these covers have boning in them that allows you to see the baby as they are nursing.

I am hoping I like this type of cover.  I honestly have never used an “official” nursing cover.  I have only ever used a blanket.  We shall see.

I love this apron pattern, as I have said before.  I made another one this week for my friend Amanda’s birthday.  This time I made a “matching” one for her daughter Caitlyn.  I just thought I would share photos.  Amanda doesn’t love to cook, but she can cook.  She is learning.  She makes the best brownies.  We used to get together weekly to do some baking, but that has slowed down now that we are both pregnant.

Now she really has no excuse not to cook because I know she will look adorable in her apron.  She said she might just throw some flour on her apron and pretend that she has been cooking all day.  Sounds like a plan to me.
