So my friend thought I should change the name of this to Scripture Sunday instead of Memorize Sunday so I am. She usually has good advice. Anyway, here are the verses that we have been working on. Last week’s verse was I John 1:9. This week’s verse is one of my all time favorites, Romans 1:16. I memorized that in high school and I really need to refresh myself on this one. It is such a good verse to repeat. I memorized it in the King James Version and I really like it in the KJV. So here it is:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Romans 1:16

My great-grandparents, my grandma, my dad and me

My great-grandparents were tobacco farmers from northern Tennessee. We would go there every year for our family reunion. It was my FAVORITE place to go. There was nothing like it. They had eight children (one of whom is my grandmother). So you can imagine when we would all get together what that was like. Their house had one bedroom on the main level. The second bedroom had been turned into a dining room. The attic was converted into two bedrooms as well. There was a weighted door in the ceiling at the top of the stairs that you used to get into the attic. I thought that was the coolest thing ever. I remember that house so well. I have nothing but fond memories of going there. My great-grandmother (Mammie) can definitely be described as frugal. I remember helping her with the dishes on a few occasions and she would actually wash her aluminum foil and reuse it. (I do it too now sometimes). Back then I thought that was crazy. She also grew a big garden every year and froze and canned food from it. She raised chickens and used their eggs. She used to wash clothes with the tub and board. My grandma said it would sometimes take her two days to get the wash done. They had their farm paid for.

My great-grandpa (Pa Jim) raised hogs. He fished. He also raised tobacco and sold that in the winter. He cut his own wood. He worked as long as he was able. I barely remember a time that I did not see Pa in his overalls. He was the sweetest man. They both lived a long time. They left a Godly legacy that their children have passed onto their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

One thing that my grandma said about her mother was that they always had enough. She said they always had enough clothes to wear, but they didn’t go get clothes when the didn’t need them (like we do).

There was one piece of advise that I will NEVER forget that Mammie told me. I think I was about 13 years old and we were talking about marriage. She told me to “Never leave yourself an out”. Don’t make it easy just to quit when times are tough. When it came to marriage she conveyed to me the need to be in it for the long haul and I have never forgotten that. From washing aluminum foil to raising a garden, my great-grandparents taught me a lot about being frugal and being happy with what you have.
