With the current bank and insurance scandals (AIG and Lehman Brothers), it can make one a little nervous. You may feel like you have no control. Well, you don’t have a lot of control over what CEOs and the federal government does. What you do have control over is what you do and what your family does. Just because the government is in debt does not mean we have to be.

The one thing that you can do in the midst of this financial turmoil is take care of yourself and your family. This means looking at your finances and looking at your debt (if you have any). Are you one of those people that think you will ALWAYS have a car payment? Do you think it is impossible to live without a car payment?

Well, let me reassure you that it is possible. It actually is possible to not have a car payment. If you have not read The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey, I suggest you start there. I don’t pretend to be the absolute authority on money matters. I am not.  I will say that our struggle is actually building up savings.  We can get out of debt, but then we are not as good about putting the money we were using to get out of debt back into a savings account.

The only reason I am even talking about this is because so many people seem to be panicked. And no, it is not better to bury your money in the backyard. Even the Bible tells us that. Anyway, going back to what you can do with your finances, check out Dave Ramsey’s Baby Steps.  He breaks things down for you so that it is actually doable.

The main point is to get out of debt as quickly as possible.  If you are in debt, don’t try blaming other people, and don’t sit around moping about it.  Get up, today and do something about it!

Leave me a comment and let me know how you have conquered debt or what your struggle with debt is.  Happy Friday!
